ChinaShell is an integrated resource platform dedicated to the study of Chinese malacology. Its core mission is to systematically document the history of molluscan research in China, while also providing essential contextual information, including biographical entries of key figures, historical place-name analyses, and access to rare public-domain literature. Many of these works were originally scattered across local gazetteers, missionary reports, museum bulletins, or obscure early journals. By making them accessible, ChinaShell aims to support researchers, students, and enthusiasts with reliable and citable materials.
Beyond molluscan taxa themselves, ChinaShell highlights the intellectual networks that shaped Chinese malacology. These include the interactions between early Chinese museums, missionaries, collectors, and European naturalists; the variant spellings, mis-romanisations, and historical evolution of Chinese place-names prior to modern standardisation; and the textual foundations that underpinned research from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. By consolidating these resources, ChinaShell seeks to contribute to a more systematic, traceable, and robust foundation for future studies in Chinese malacology.
